Hi Mama’s,

I hope the month of November is treating you well. If you’re new here, welcome to Matresa, a platform dedicated to helping mothers on their journey of motherhood. If you’ve been struggling with pelvic pain and it’s starting to become unbearable, you might find the answer you’re looking for today.

The Hidden Struggle For New Mums

This week, we’ll be delving into a lesser-known condition that affects one in five mums in the UK, pelvic-girdle pain (PGP).

It makes everyday movement - from walking, climbing stairs, even turning in bed - a major challenge. Although problems with pelvic joints are a common symptom of pregnancy, it’s good to know that if you are experiencing any of the challenges mentioned above, you should seek help from a medical professional.

The Pelvic Partnership is an amazing charity which helps raise awareness and supports women with this condition. They inform healthcare professionals about PGP and advocate for best practice in its treatment. They can offer support and information about the symptoms you may be experiencing and guide you on the next steps to receiving the help you need.

What You Can Do

Here are steps we encourage:

  • Awareness and checks: If you’re a new mum, or know one, check for persistent pelvic pain beyond what you expect. Don’t dismiss it.

  • Professional help: Seek the advice of a qualified physiotherapist or specialist in pelvic health (especially if pain is limiting mobility or day-to-day life). We have a range of experts partnered with Matresa listed on our website, if you would like support, please get in touch.

  • Modify activity: Gentle movement, avoiding sudden twisting or heavy lifting, supportive braces or belts (as advised) can help.

  • Workplace support: If you’re returning to work, discuss adjustments (e.g., sit/stand options, breaks, movement-friendly environment).

  • Community & peer support: Connecting with other new mums going through similar issues will help reduce feelings of isolation. This can be done in our Matresa mum’s group chat, a safe space to find mothers going through the same journey as you.

Turkey & Veg Cottage Pie

As the temperatures drop and the evenings draw in, this warming, family-friendly cottage pie is the ultimate winter comfort. It’s simple, nourishing and perfect for busy mums. Batch-cook it on a Sunday, serve it for dinner, and enjoy the leftovers for lunch during the week. It’s also great for baby weaning, and you can chop the veggies smaller for fussy eaters so everyone around the table gets a wholesome, hearty meal.

Swap regular mash for sweet-potato topping for extra vitamin A and fibre. If you are a vegetarian, why not try Quorn mince?

Ingredients:
Filling:

  • 3 tbsp olive oil

  • 1.25kg beef mince

  • 2 onions (finely chopped)

  • 3 carrots (chopped)

  • 3 celery sticks (chopped)

  • 2 garlic cloves (finely chopped)

  • 3 tbsp plain flour

  • 1 tbsp tomato purée

  • 1 glass red wine (optional)

  • 850ml beef stock

  • 4 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • Thyme sprigs + 2 bay leaves

Mash:

  • 1.8kg potatoes (peeled, chopped)

  • 225ml milk

  • 25g butter

  • 200g cheddar (3/4 in mash, rest on top)

  • Nutmeg, salt, pepper

Method:

  1. Heat 1 tbsp oil, brown the mince in batches, set aside.

  2. Add remaining oil, cook onions, carrots, celery until soft.

  3. Stir in garlic, flour and tomato purée; add mince back in.

  4. Add wine (if using), then stock, Worcestershire sauce, thyme and bay leaves.

  5. Simmer uncovered ~45 mins until thickened; remove herbs and season.

  6. Boil potatoes until tender; drain and mash with milk, butter and cheddar. Season.

  7. Spoon meat into one large or several small dishes. Top with mash and extra cheese.

  8. Bake at 220°C (200°C fan) for 25–30 mins until golden.
For freezing: assemble, cool, freeze. Cook from thawed as above, or from frozen at 180°C covered for 1.5 hrs, then uncover and finish at 220°C for 20 mins.
